Halle's: Memoirs of a Family Department Store, 1891-1982
Published in Hardcover by Octavia Pr (November, 1987)
Author: James M. Wood
Average review score:

Halle's was Cleveland retail.
If you were a Clevelander in the 50's and 60's and wanted to shop in style, Halle's was your store. This book refreshes the memories of those who had the pleasure of shopping this retail institution while it told how a family of merchants experienced the successes and ultimate failure of a Cleveland retail icon.

If you are not a Clevelander, this book gives great detail of what "carriage trade" retail was and what happened to it.

Good reading, lots of memories, good fun.

Interesting chronicle of the rise and fall of a family store
Halle Brothers was a Cleveland institution. It was, like many family-owned department stores, a vital player in the city's history. As the city grew, so did Halle Brothers. Author James Wood paints an interesting, vivid portrait of a store, the likes of which, are rarely seen in today's world of "cookie cutter" chains.

Hitchcock's films
Published in Unknown Binding by Zwemmer; Barnes ()
Author: Robin Wood
Average review score:

Robin Wood is the Preeminent Authority
Robin Wood is the Preeminent Authority on Hitchcock. Robin Wood is without question the greatest authority on the cinematic works of Sir Alfred Hitchcock. Years ago after seeing many films as I was growing up I decided to do some reading on the role of the Director. By pure chance I picked up and purchased Robin Wood's original edition of this book. Obviously it was at that time, myself still being in school very challenging reading for me. However, I was able to recognize brilliance over hypocrisy. Robin Wood has ever since remained the preeminent authority on Hitchcock's films. He has honestly admitted that his perspectives on some of his analysis have changed. This is not an outright statement that has had a change of heart or acquired a new taste in the aesthetics of Hitchcock's films. On the contrary, through ongoing analysis he has come even closer to the secret of Hitchcock's mastery of his art. An artist creates a work. A great portion of that work is constructed with conscious deliberate thought, some is intuitive and a small portion may be subconscious. Robin Wood, I believe has showed a continuum in his analysis of Hitchcock's work. Wood continues to explore the avenues of the intuitive and subconscious nature of Alfred Hitchcock, which manifests itself in his films. To this end I believe Wood has devoted a good portion of his life. The methods of the great pioneers have often puzzled conventional minds. I am not a great pioneer. I am puzzled. And what the heck does conventional mean? Happy reading!

A Home from the Woods: Adventures and Methods Restoring and Building Authentic Log Cabins
Published in Paperback by Writers Club Press (September, 2002)
Author: Michael J. Antoniak
Average review score:

The life of your dreams
Michael Antoniak and his family have done what many of us dream about: they left the big city and carved a wonderful life and a wonderful home for themselves in the country. Antoniak's entertaining and informative book explains how to build different types of log cabins without being a professional carpenter. Whether you're ready to build your own country retreat, or just want to dream about it, this is the book for you.

Dieing Determination
It has been a long time since I've enjoyed a book so much as to pick it up and not be able to set it down until I had read it from cover to cover. The author and his family had so much determination in the success of there projects that most any other individual would have given up long ago. I too live in a log home hand built by our family but with mill purchased logs.
But the inspiration I've recieved from this book has inspired my husband and I to attempt to build a log cabin of round logs up on the hill of our property unless we can find an authentic log cabin to relocate here. We plan to use many of the methods mentioned in the book .

How to Make Animated Toys
Published in Paperback by Sterling Publications (April, 1987)
Author: David Wakefield
Average review score:

Very Good Book about Wooden Toy Making
I've had this book for over a year and used it as the basis for a number of toys I've created. The instuctions are clear and concise. The plans are easy to follow and include scaled drawings for each toy. The author also includes a very useful discussion of materials and finishes appropriate for building children's toys and design ideas for building your own animated creations. These sections alone justify the purchase of the book. Be aware that most of the designs in the book are copyrighted and if you wish to build them for commercial purposes you will need to contact the author. My favorite plan is for a very simple to make wooden rattle based on a traditional folk art design (this is not copyrighted). I've built six rattles and presented them as gifts to new parents and have been delighted to see how much infants love to play with them. This is a great source for wooden toy makers.

My favourite woodworking book
Whenever I am looking to make a toy for someone, this book is invariably the first one I always reach for. The plans have heaps of detail and processes for making the toys are very well thought out. These toys are not only animated, but appear to be alive, David has put a lot of effort into making these toys realistic and the movement fun for children (and lots of us not so young). As an added bonus to heaps of great plans, David has gone to great pains to talk about the processes behind designing and building a good toy, this books is worth it for this alone.

How to Read the Greek New Testament

Author: Guy N. Woods

Great resource for teacher, preacher, student
Brother Woods' book is an invaluable guide on how to get the most out of the New Testament by looking at the original language. Every Bible student should have this easy-to-read and easy-to-follow volume in their library to get the most out of the Word. Even if you know absolutely nothing of the Greek language, brother Woods' book will help you. A very inexpensive price for such a rich work.

Great for all Bible students
If you know absolutely nothing of the Greek language, brother Woods' book is a great place to start. He starts with the explanation of why this is important to students of the Word, and then methodically explains how to use the Greek language in your study. Highly recommended!

The Human Body in Health and Illness

Authors: Barbara Herlihy, Nancy K. Maebius, and Terri Wood

Fabulous!
This is a great textbook - a fun, readable format for a topic that could very easily be really dry. Other texts I have used in continuing my nursing studies have paled in comparison to this one, which I used in my first course, A&P. Nothing can live up to this. Good job!

the Human Body in Health and Illness
The format of this book is easy to understand...it makes a sometimes difficult subject fun! Students from a variety of academic backgrounds will find this book helpful...it is written with all students in mind. Students with high level academic skills are lead into additional exercises where their skills are challenged. Our college has used this book to train Massage Therapists. We found this text and the study guide perfect for body workers training out of the traditional academic A&P setting. There is an emphasis on providing information regarding contraindications which these students must know in order for them to work effectively with a variety of clients. I highly recommend this book for faculty looking for an Anatomy & Physiology text which addresses classes with multiple academic levels and styles.

A beautiful story
This is a beautifully written story about a young girl's discovery of how life and death in the natural world are always linked together. If you love the outdoors and the animals that live by the rules of nature, and if you want your children to understand the relationships of animals in the natural world, this is a must read.

A Child's Quest for Understanding and Justice
Gorgeous language captures that inevitable moment in every child's life when they feel the injustice and poignancy of death. Whether it be a family member or creature of nature, we all have experienced that one moment when we realized things will never be the same; the world is forever different. Ellen Wood weaves a beautiful story of yearning and vengence, and ultimate discovery for a young girl who seeks to understand why living things must die. A beautifully written story that is a joy to read-aloud.

A stunning book--would make a great gift.
This is one of the most beautifully put together books I've seen in a while--the texts, the art, the commentaries--it's all first rate, a rich and luscious feast for mind and heart and soul.

Sensual, intelligent, passionate, and soulful!
This book is elegant, powerful, passionate, dirty, tasteful, and soulful! I hope that I have tempted all who read this by the diverse adjectives used here! This book will appeal to many different tastes, but by all means drink from this book's fount! Water of your Bath by Ahmasi, Be Somebody Fragrant by Peter J.Harris, and Poem of Friendship by Nikki Giovanni are my personal favorites-but I LOVE the whole book! My highest recommendation!A great gift book! -ed-

In Lithuanian Wood
Published in Paperback by White Pine Press (December, 1998)
Author: Wendell Mayo
Average review score:

Baltic Grain of Wood
Lithuanian Wood is this moment resting on my coffee table. The edges show a little comfort of wear and tear. I couldn't resist turning these pages... As Lithuania is neighbor to my own Latvia (I hold dual citizenship for Latvia and USA), Mayo's tales charmed me with similarities to the culture in which I was raised and nurtured. I am astounded that a non-Lithuanian could capture the essence of another culture so well.

A Must Buy for Lithuanian Americans!
This book provides a touching and artistic view of post-communist Lithuania. You really get a feel for how the years of communist rule affected the way people think, act, and live. The short stories are creatively interwoven and make this book an enjoyable and quick read.
